Location
This length of canal runs from Hayes in the west, past the Paddington Arm entrance, through southern Southall, onto the join with the River Brent at Hanwell, finally ending at Elthorne Park Extension by the M4.
Description
A long stretch of canal supplying coarse angling via season ticket in West London. For the club’s webpage for this venue click HERE.
The fishery begins at Station Road Bridge, Hayes (No 200) in urban surroundings with the towpath on the north bank, and runs eastwards past Shackles Dock Arm and under the railway bridge. The canal continues east under North Hyde Gardens, crosses the River Crane Aqueduct and then goes beneath the large A312 Hayes Bypass (The Parkway) bridge, and onto the join with the Paddington Arm at Bulls Bridge which is opposite a dry dock.
The canal is now in Southall and progresses eastward through suburban surroundings, under the Western Road and on towards Southall Recreation Ground which contains a WC, and is adjacent to the Old Oak Tree Inn. Along all this stretch from Bulls Bridge the towpath is on the north bank with a small road directly behind it.
The canal by the Inn has a winding hole, and then runs under North Hyde Bridge (No 202) and swings north east and onto Adelaide Dock and then Wolf Bridge at Norwood Road (A3005). From here the waterway continues north east and runs adjacent to Havelock Road before passing the entrance to the Havelock Road Arm (where a section of canal runs due north for a short distance) and up to Norwood Top Lock (No 90).
After the lock the canal runs under Glade Lane Bridge and on for a short distance to Norwood Lock. This lock sits in Glade Lane Canalside Park and from here the waterway runs east again for a little way past a winding hole and comes to the famous Three Bridges. At this point it runs under Windmill Lane and simultaneously crosses the railway.
From here the canal descends through the Hanwell Flight, six locks in rapid succession. It is then joined on the north side by the River Brent near to the Fox pub. The canal continues in a south easterly direction through treelined surroundings of the River Brent Park Walk, under Trumpers Way bridge, and on into the parkland of Elthorne Park Extension where Osterley Lock No 98 lies.
Here the River Brent flows around the lock, and the canal goes under the M4, through more parkland, under the Piccadilly Line (Wyke Green Railway) bridge, through more parkland and up to Gallows Bridge where the towpath crosses to the south bank. The waterway runs past the M4 on the north bank and by Clitheroe’s Lock Weir Entrance where the River Brent again runs off from the canal, and on to Clitheroe’s Lock No 99 where the fishery ends.

Canal fishing in Denham, Uxbridge and West Drayton
Information about fishing the canal at Denham, Uxbridge and West Drayton including fishery location, fish species present, ticket type, and fishery controller. Part of a guide to angling in Middlesex.
Description
A long stretch of canal supplying coarse angling via season ticket. For the club’s webpage for this venue click HERE.
Denham Deep Lock is rather deep with a rise of 11 foot, 1 inch. As a result when emptied this causes a considerable surge in current for some distance.
From here the canal descends into the rural approach to north Uxbridge, passes under White Bridge (where the towpath continues on the east bank) and then the A40. On the south side of the A40 the River Colne (reinforced by the recent arrival of the Misbourne) feeds the canal, making for some interesting angling options. Upstream of this point to the lock this inflow causes the canal to push gently upstream for some time after Denham Deep has been emptied and the down wash of lock water has completed.
Thereafter the canal continues along and enters an increasingly built up environment until it arrives at Bridge 184 and the towpath switches to the west bank where it enters Uxbridge proper. From here the waterway proceeds southwards, passing under the A4020 Oxford Road at the Swan & Bottle Bridge, and continues on to the Dolphin Bridge (No 186) where the A4007 St Johns Road crosses it.
Passing through Uxbridge Moor, the canal proceeds south through built up areas, past the Gas Works Bridge (No 187) and onto Cowley Shovel Bridge (No 188) where it is crossed by the B470 Iver Lane. Along this stretch there is also a towpath on the east bank running north from the B470 about halfway up to the Gas Works Bridge.
By this time the canal is in Cowley, and the towpath is on the east bank as the waterway heads the short distance to Cowley Lock and then proceeds southwards through a less built up area, with much of the west bank being free of housing and industrial estates.
Passing Cowley Hall Recreation Ground and then under Benbow Bridge (No 189, the canal swings towards the south east and runs under Packet Boat Lane Bridge (No 190), past Lindon Doors Dock Bridge (190A – this is a footbridge for the towpath) onto the meeting with the Slough Arm (Cowley Peachey Junction). From here it enters a more built up area again with the towpath remaining on the east bank, and proceeds over the River Pinn Aqueduct and past Tesco Yiewsley Moorings to the end of this stretch at Trout Road Bridge (No 191) with Yiewsley to the east and West Drayton to the south.
