Information about fishing at River Thames, Teddington Lock to Richmond Bridge including fishery location, fish species present, ticket type, and fishery controller. Part of a guide to angling in Richmond.
Description
The first tidal reach of the Thames below Teddington Lock, this is a long stretch of bank that starts alongside Ham Lands Nature Reserve, runs past the famous Eel Pie Island and continues past the north edge of the National Trust’s Ham House. There is a ferry across the river at this point. The towpath continues east past River Lane and into Petersham Gardens where the local authority permits angling from the towpath. Be aware that cattle sometimes graze in these meadows. This is opposite Glover’s Island.
The towpath on this stretch is largely remote from roads. Parking can be found near Teddington Lock in Riverside Drive, or side roads like Locksmeade Road. There is a car park by the Thames at Ham House which is free 24/7 and holds 80 spaces. The river can also be accessed at River Lane.
There are swims spread along the bank on this stretch, but are only fish-able while the tide is reasonably high. One tactic used here is to arrive towards high tide and manually bait up your spots while the tide is coming in, then set up in the swim and fish over the applied baits.

Description
River Thames, Kingston to Teddington Lock is another urban length of river bank, being either next to main roads or in town parks, this is the final non-tidal part of the river. There are two islands; Steven’s Eyot which is in front of a park called Canbury Gardens where fishing is permitted, and Trowlock Island which starts at the point where Lower Ham Road peels away from the Thames.
Downstream of Lower Ham Road, as the river approaches Teddington Weir, the river bank enters parkland which can be accessed from local roads including Burnell Avenue and Drysart Avenue. In this area the YMCA Hawker Centre is located which has a cafe and toilet. In this vicinity there is a section of bankside which is flat concrete that may be suitable for disabled anglers and which can be accessed via a ramp.

Hemp for the roach works. For chub try close to the boats on the far bank, and try a leger 3/4 the way across, back-leaded against the current which is not too heavy in the summer. The bream run in shoals, so if you can get on them you may be in for a big bag.
The carp are more likely to be caught in the downstream section, but a part of this – 400 metres downstream of the ferry in Hurst Park – is closed to fishing as it is part of a new conservation area.
This stretch of river runs from just downstream of Sunbury Lock along to Molesey Lock in north Surrey. Here the river is punctuated by a series of islands that in several sections reduce the width of the available river: Sunbury Court Island, Grand Junction Island, Platt’s Eyot (the largest), Garrick’s Ait, Tagg’s Island, and Ash Island which is just before Molesey Lock.

Fishing the River Thames, Molesey Lock to Albany Reach
Information about fishing at River Thames, Molesey Lock to Albany Reach including fishery location, fish species present, ticket type, and fishery controller. Part of a guide to angling in the River Thames.
Description
This short stretch of fishing river is very urban, being either next to main roads or in town parks.
There are no islands, but the river Ember (AKA the River Mole) arrives at the Thames between the two parks after its long journey from Sussex, having rejoined with the ‘Mole’ just upstream of Hampton Court Way (the A309).
Angling on the Thames is allowed in the two parks (on the obvious proviso that a rod licence is held), and bivvies are also permitted (tents and gazebos are not).
The Ember/ Mole cannot be fished – Elmbridge Council do not permit angling on the Mole in these parks.
There are several boating clubs in this vicinity.
Albany Reach can be accessed from Aragon Avenue where free parking is available.
