Fishing the Thames, Castelnau
Description
River Thames, Richmond Bridge to Putney Bridge is a stretch of large tidal river supplying free coarse angling. This high up the tidal stretch the water is usually freshwater and avoids the brackish water present around the Thames Barrier at high tide. The tidal flow is very strong and water can rise or fall very quickly in the area.
Many of the usual river species are present, and specimens of roach, bream and dace can be found here. Some anglers prefer to fish the lower tide, when the river is narrower, setting up on the mud flats; trotting through can be effective at this time. Legering can be more effective when the water is higher and you need to get baits out further. Some carp anglers prefer to lay traps as the tide is coming in and then fish through the high tide, hand delivering rigs and beds of baits with their rods set up on grassy bank spots.
Experienced anglers can catch 20-30 pounds of fish around Kew and Barnes, and can catch bream to 7lb.
Angling at Tidefest 2015:
Fishing the Richmond stretch is quite straightforward. The town has some car parks although these, like the CPZs are not free on any day. The stretch down to Richmond Lock has far less tidal flow than the river below the lock, so is a more regular fishing environment.
