Details
Heading north from Mytchett Place Road, the Basingstoke Canal parts company with Mytchett on the west bank while the east bank enters countryside on the journey to Frimley Green. This more rural stretch runs straight for a mile to the Guildford Road (B3012), going past Potters Pool on the east bank; this is the only angling feature along this section.
The Canal then goes under the B3012 and swings to the north east; the towing path switches to the east bank. Shortly after that it crosses the railway via an aqueduct and after a short distance meets Wharfenden Lake on the north bank, then swinging east as it continues towards Deepcut along a tree lined bank. The Canal now enters a prolonged rural stretch.
After going under Deepcut Road the Canal proceeds eastwards for about 3/4 of a mile until it hits Lock 28: Frimley Top Lock. This is Surrey’s most upstream lock and marks the beginning of the eastern, lock-filled, zone of the Canal. The Canal descends through two further locks before reaching Curzon Bridge where Brunswick road crosses the Canal. Around these locks are several wide parts of canal including Lock 26 Winding Hole, providing a series of features for angling.
Between Curzon Bridge and Lock 25 another hole is sited, and then the Canal continues eastwards, running down a series of locks and going under Cowshott Bridge and Pirbright Bridge where the towing path switches to the north bank. The Canal now enters Brookwood.
In Brookwood the Basingstoke Canal runs past Connaught Crescent winding hole, and under Sheets Mill Bridge before hitting a series of three locks (14, 13 and 12) just before the A322 Bagshot Road at Brookwood Bridge. This provides a prolonged stretch of uninterrupted canal for fishing. Just north of Brookwood Bridge lies the Nags Head Inn (GU21 2RP).

Details
Information about fishing the Basingstoke Canal at Knaphill, Woking, West Byfleet and Woodham.
Emerging from under the A322 Bagshot Road the Canal heads east through countrified territory with the towing path on the south bank. Looping north around Brookwood Lye it runs to Hermitage Road (just west of this is Hermitage turning bay where angling is not permitted) providing a stretch devoid of locks. After going under Hermitage Road it continues east along another stretch free of locks and passes Blackhorse Road Winding Hole before reaching St John’s Road.
The towing path then flips over to the north bank and the Canal enters an increasingly urban environment. Here the Canal runs through a series of locks and bridges in rapid succession until it clears Langmans Bridge (on the north end of Langmans Lane GU21 7PY). After this there is a prolonged stretch free of locks that rolls along under a series of bridges and includes Arthurs Bridge Winding Hole. At Wheatsheaf Bridge where the A3046 crosses the Canal the towing path swaps over to the south bank.
The Canal continues eastward, proceeding along another lock-free length as it runs below Monument Road leaving Woking behind and heading into Sheerwater where it passes Paxton Gardens Winding Hole before hitting Lock 6 (Woodham Top Lock – KT15 3QW). It is over three miles from Langmans Bridge to Woodham Top Lock.
From here a series of short stretches between the remaining locks mark the 1.3 miles of the final descent to the Wey Navigation.
At Ash the Canal crosses the Blackwater River (and the A3100) and enters Surrey via the Ash Aqueduct. The canal runs east at this point, then swings north east and goes under Ash Vale Railway Bridge and then Heath Road. On the north side of this bridge the Canal widens for a short distance. It then swings northwards and enters a long uninterrupted stretch until Heath Vale Bridge with The Swan pub on the east bank.
Some anglers consider the vicinity of the Swan to be a winter hot spot for the Canal.
North of Heath Vale Bridge the Canal rolls along to Great Bottom Flash (click HEREfor rules for the Canal).
Following this the Canal continues northbound for a short distance with a tree-lined far bank, then goes under Ash Vale Railway Station Bridge and on the north side of the bridge there is a turning point that serves as the next feature on the water.
Again the Canal heads northwards with a wooded far bank, and then enters the next feature: Winter’s Close Winding Hole.
The Canal then swings northwest and runs a short distance – with woodland on the far bank once more – to Anglers Flash. After this it heads north, running under a private footbridge (Deadman’s Footbridge), and then traverses a small distance and goes under Mytchett Lake Railway Bridge, and then enters Mytchett Lake. This is a private fishery fenced off from the Canal, and the BCAA does not have fishing rights there. The canal adjacent to the Lake is tipped as a hot spot.
The Canal exits the lake shortly after entering, leaving on the west bank under Mytchett Lake Road and then heading north. After a short distance with a field on the east bank the Canal comes to Potters Wharf, home to the Canal Centre.
