Information about trout and salmon seasons

In south east England there are varying rules on the times of year that fishing for trout and salmon are legally permitted in the byelaws.

Fishery owners can be more strict than these byelaws should they so choose – please check the venue’s season rules before angling.

Close season dates:

1. Thames byelaw area

Rainbow trout in still-waters:
No close season
Brown trout in fully enclosed waters:
No close season
Salmon and migratory trout, all waters:
1 Oct – 31 March
Brown and rainbow trout, rivers, streams and drains:
1 Oct – 31 March

2. Southern byelaw area

Rainbow trout in still-waters:
No close season
Brown trout in fully enclosed waters:
No close season
Salmon, all waters:
3 Oct – 16 January
Migratory trout, all waters:
1 Nov – 30 April
Brown and rainbow trout, rivers, streams and drains:
1 Nov – 2 April
