The most upstream venue is in Runnymede Park where angling is on a season ticket in well kept surroundings. From this point downstream there are numerous venues within Surrey offering free river fishing, interspersed with several Locks where angling is permitted on an Environment Agency season ticket. The free stretches are popular and keep nets can be used there.

By the time the big river arrives in Surrey it is a wide powerful waterway, the king of England’s rivers. The stretch that borders Surrey sees the point at which the Thames is joined by a series of tributaries: the Colne and Colnebrook, the Wey, the Mole, the Longford, the Hogsmill, and the Wandle. These tributaries themselves are often deep, strong rivers at the point of confluence, and themselves offer some of southern England’s finest river angling.
The Surrey stretches hold all the big river species: barbel, carp, pike, perch, bream, roach, rudd, to mention just the common species many of whom grow to specimen proportions in the Surrey Thames.
