Information about fishing the Basingstoke Canal at Knaphill, Woking, West Byfleet and Woodham.
Emerging from under the A322 Bagshot Road the Canal heads east through countrified territory with the towing path on the south bank. Looping north around Brookwood Lye it runs to Hermitage Road (just west of this is Hermitage turning bay where angling is not permitted) providing a stretch devoid of locks. After going under Hermitage Road it continues east along another stretch free of locks and passes Blackhorse Road Winding Hole before reaching St John’s Road.
The towing path then flips over to the north bank and the Canal enters an increasingly urban environment. Here the Canal runs through a series of locks and bridges in rapid succession until it clears Langmans Bridge (on the north end of Langmans Lane GU21 7PY). After this there is a prolonged stretch free of locks that rolls along under a series of bridges and includes Arthurs Bridge Winding Hole. At Wheatsheaf Bridge where the A3046 crosses the Canal the towing path swaps over to the south bank.
The Canal continues eastward, proceeding along another lock-free length as it runs below Monument Road leaving Woking behind and heading into Sheerwater where it passes Paxton Gardens Winding Hole before hitting Lock 6 (Woodham Top Lock – KT15 3QW). It is over three miles from Langmans Bridge to Woodham Top Lock.
From here a series of short stretches between the remaining locks mark the 1.3 miles of the final descent to the Wey Navigation.
